‘Hope for a Street Dog’ Spay/Neuter Clinic this past Wednesday in Paraiso, Costa Rica was an amazing success. With two high volume specialty vets and their assistants we were able to help EIGHTY SIX dogs and cats. The day was a perfect example of what ‘community’ is all about. From tireless volunteers to local business’s that provided accommodations and meals to the Veterinary team and all the people that opened up their hearts we were in awe. 

Every animal was treated with the utmost care, love and respect in every aspect of the clinic. From the Doctors who hugged each dog before the procedure to the postoperative team the love was palpable. A transport team picked up and returned dogs and cats to their perspective homes far and wide. 

 

It is with much gratitude and appreciation that we give thanks to all who participated.  Through your donations and sponsorships ‘Hope for a Street Dog’ was able to fund FIFTY animals! About Hope 4 a Street Dog

Whenever I was asked growing up what I wanted to do, my response always was “to help the animals”. At age 8 I started volunteering at the local pound. Since then, I have volunteered at many shelters throughout the years, organized volunteer programs, coordinated training, set up fundraising projects, etc… all to help the shelter dogs. I became a certified veterinary technician, attended many behavior classes and have surrounded myself with like people who have the same passion. I’ve shed many tears and have rejoiced as many times. Anyone who shares this passion knows the experiences can be bittersweet. I am a partner in a non-profit dog rescue organization www.longtraildogs.org where we have placed many homeless dogs with lifelong families.

I have a home in Junquillal, Costa Rica. It is where I spend 6 months out of the year. My passion takes me to the streets where I find countless numbers of homeless “street dogs”. Families that have multiple dogs yet can’t afford to feed them, let alone spay/neuter them. I gather resources from far and near to help. Junquillal has a great community and a veterinarian that supports my efforts. My goal is to organize as many spay/neuter clinics as donations will cover; educate owners on the importance of spay/neuter. Create a sponsorship program to help pay for unaltered animals, the care of litters of puppies/kittens that are neglected and food/medical attention for the homeless street dogs. 

One of the greatest rewards is to relieve a street dog from the neglect, abuse or suffering that it has endured. There is something profoundly gratifying with removing a dog from horrible conditions, giving it the TLC it has been starving for and placing it with an awesome family for the rest of its life. These beings are grateful, loyal, giving, and show ‘us’ the meaning of ‘unconditional love’. They forgive and hopefully forget their past, they teach us to be present, and in return only ask for our love (and sometimes a treat). I am happy to share my time and love with each and every rescued dog that comes into my life and I am grateful to all those who open up their hearts and homes to these special dogs. Welcome to the 1st post for the "Hope 4 a Street Dog" project.  I wanted to share a little more information about my vision for this project, as it is always evolving as I learn more about the needs of the Street Dogs.

My mission: Quite simple actually.  To be able to create an ongoing resource funded by Junquillal and the surrounding communities as well as outside supporters who share the passion of helping Street Dogs. This fund will be used help pay for and/or supplement spay/neuter clinics, sponsor dogs in need of urgent medical care, and to basically relieve as much suffering as we can.

Since arriving late October I have been very busy building a team of volunteers to help organize the 1st spay/neuter clinic sponsored by "Hope 4 a Street Dog"!  We have our local vet, Dr. Rosa who is an amazing support system allowing us access to much needed antibiotics, pain medication and deworming all at cost.  We have a vet hired from San Jose who will arrive on December 9th to prepare for the clinic on December 10th.  We are hoping to alter between 50-60 animals that day!  She is quick, clean comes with a team of 2 vets and 2 assistants.  We are excited to be a part of this experience.   We have hung our flyers, we have gone down all the back roads, talking to the locals, convincing them of the need to spay/neuter their pets.  We are hoping most are in agreement and will bring their pets.  There are also dogs that we have found that need medical attention.  We've created a list in hopes to help them out in the near future.  There are litters of puppies that need to be taken care of and homes found for.  We've given food to the mama's that are trying to nurse pups.  We've also given antibiotics to low/no income owners for their dogs that have the dreaded "tick fever".

Here is Nala and Sophie... their mom was hit by a car when they were younger.  They were both placed in separate homes, but both neglected, emaciated, full of parasites (inside and out!) and needed a 2nd chance!  "Hope 4 a Street Dog" took them in.  They received much needed medical care, several baths, good food, TLC and they thrived!  The best news.... they will be put on a plane with their new owners and be the queens of Cocoa Beach, FL!
